The Royal Victorian Medal forms part of the Royal Victorian Order, established by Queen Victoria in 1896 to recognise exceptional personal service to the Monarch.

History of the Royal Victorian Medal

The Royal Victorian Medal is awarded to individuals who have rendered personal service to the Sovereign or Royal Family, traditionally recognising those serving in roles below officer rank.

Originally awarded in silver and bronze, a higher grade in silver-gilt was introduced during the reign of King George V.

Recipients of the silver-gilt medal may also wear previously awarded silver or bronze versions, with the silver-gilt grade taking precedence in the official order of wear.

Queen Elizabeth II (EIIR) Version

This version features the insignia associated with the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952–2022).

The medal is traditionally suspended from a dark blue ribbon with red, white and red stripes at each edge.

For foreign recipients appointed as honorary associates, the ribbon includes an additional central white stripe, distinguishing it from the standard ribbon.
