History of the Royal Victorian Medal

The Royal Victorian Medal forms part of the Royal Victorian Order, established by Queen Victoria in 1896 to recognise distinguished personal service to the Monarch.

The medal is traditionally awarded to individuals serving below officer rank who have provided personal services to the Sovereign or members of the Royal Family.

Originally instituted in silver and bronze, an additional higher grade in silver-gilt was introduced during the reign of King George V.

Recipients awarded the silver-gilt grade may wear it alongside previously awarded silver or bronze versions of the Royal Victorian Medal, with the silver-gilt medal taking precedence in the official order of wear.

Queen Elizabeth II (EIIR) Version

This full-size version represents the Royal Victorian Medal issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952–2022).

The standard medal ribbon is dark blue with red, white and red stripes at each edge. Foreign recipients wear a ribbon featuring an additional central white stripe to distinguish their honorary status.
