NATO ISAF (Afghanistan) Miniature Medal
ISAF NATO Afghanistan UN Medal for service in Afghanistan. Personnel eligible for the award of the ISAF medal are those who are members of units or staffs taking part in, or supporting NATO operations in Afghanistan. Entitlement will be acquired by those forces under NATO command or control whilst in the Joint Operational Area (JOA), and those deployed to the JOA under national command in support of the NATO operation. This medal may not be worn by UK personnel.
AREA OF OPERATION
The JOA includes Afghanistan and all neighbouring countries that have borders contiguous with Afghanistan where forces could assemble and from which ISAF may be supported. The ISAF area of operations includes the airspace of Afghanistan.
The qualifying period in the Afghanistan JOA is 30 days continuous service or 60 days accumulated service within a two year period, from 1 June 2003 and a termination date, which will be notified in a supplementary document.
Aircrew will accumulate one day's service for the first sortie flown of any day in the Area of Operations; additional sorties flown on the same day receive no further credit. This requirement exists for support as well as combat aircraft; support aircraft include tanker, airlift and surveillance platforms.
For award of the NATO Medal for Kosovo, personnel must complete both the qualifying period of service (below) and meet the eligibility criteria (above). The qualifying periods are: Thirty days continuous or accumulated service on the land, at sea or in the air space of Kosovo and other territories of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Albania, the Former Republic of Macedonia, and the Adriatic and Ionian Seas (the theatre of operations); Ninety days continuous or accumulated service, in the territories of Italy, Greece, and Hungary, in direct support of the NATO operations in Kosovo (the adjacent area); or Aircrew who participated in Operation ALLIED FORCE between 24 Mar and 10 Jun 99 will be deemed to have qualified after flying 15 sorties during the operation in the airspace of Kosovo and the other territories of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Aircrew who completed less than 15 sorties under this criteria will be allowed to aggregate the number of sorties completed with other qualifying service.
The Medal is circular in form and made of bronze, and bearing: on the obverse, the NATO star set in a wreath of olive leaves; and on the reverse, the title "North Atlantic Treaty Organization" and the words "In the service of peace and freedom" in English and French.
A large ring is attached to the top of the medal. The bar is sewn onto the ribbon.
The medal is always issued with a bar, inscribed "KOSOVO"
