The Military Medal – George V Crowned Head Miniature represents the rare second George V type of this distinguished British gallantry award.

Instituted on 25 March 1916, the Military Medal was awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for acts of bravery in battle. Additional qualifying acts were recognised by the award of bars worn on the medal ribbon.

This version features the crowned and uniformed portrait of King George V introduced in 1930. Used between 1930 and 1937, it is generally regarded as the rarest of the principal Military Medal portrait types because comparatively few awards were made during the interwar period.

The reverse carries the inscription “FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD” within a laurel wreath, surmounted by the Royal Cypher and crown. The miniature is worn from the distinctive dark blue, white and crimson striped ribbon.
