Africa Service Medal 1939–1945

The Africa Service Medal was a South African Second World War campaign medal, instituted in 1943 for members of the Union Defence Forces who met the qualifying service requirements during the war.

To qualify, personnel were required to have volunteered for war service outside South Africa and to have completed the prescribed period of qualifying service between 6 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.

The medal could be awarded for qualifying service both within South Africa and overseas.

The obverse features a map of Africa surrounded by the medal's title in English and Afrikaans. The reverse depicts a springbok bounding across a landscape, representing South Africa.

The distinctive ribbon features a broad orange-red central stripe, bordered by yellow and green stripes

Historical information

Eligibility

The Africa Service Medal was available to members of the Union Defence Forces, South African Police and South African Railways Police who met the relevant wartime service and volunteering requirements.

Qualifying service fell between 6 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.

I'd use a historical section like this rather than putting every eligibility detail into the opening paragraph. People shopping for the medal want to identify it quickly; collectors/researchers can then read further down.
