EU – ESDP Miniature Medal with ARTEMIS Clasp
EU ESDP Medal with ARTEMIS Clasp
The European Union Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) Medal with ARTEMIS clasp recognises service during Operation ARTEMIS, a European Union military intervention conducted in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between June and September 2003.
Established in response to escalating violence during the Ituri conflict, Operation ARTEMIS was authorised by the United Nations Security Council and led by the European Union under French command. The mission's primary objective was to stabilise the security situation around Bunia, protect civilians, and support humanitarian operations until a larger UN peacekeeping force could be deployed.
Operation ARTEMIS holds a unique place in European military history. It was:
- The first autonomous military operation conducted by the European Union.
- The first rapid-response mission undertaken by the EU.
- The first EU military operation conducted outside Europe.
- A major milestone in the development of the European Security and Defence Policy.
The deployment successfully reduced the intensity of the conflict and demonstrated the EU's ability to conduct independent military operations beyond its borders.
Medal Design
The medal is issued with the ARTEMIS clasp, identifying participation in Operation ARTEMIS in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
