Conspicuous Gallantry Medal – George V
The Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM) was one of Britain's most prestigious awards for gallantry at sea, awarded to naval ratings for acts of exceptional bravery in action with the enemy.
The George V issue bears the King's portrait on the obverse with the inscription GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:. The reverse carries the words FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY within a laurel wreath surmounted by the Imperial Crown.
The CGM during the First World War
The First World War represented one of the most significant periods in the history of the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, with awards made for exceptional bravery during naval actions and operations involving naval personnel ashore.
Perhaps the most remarkable recipient was Arthur Robert Blore, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Blore was awarded the CGM for gallantry during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 and subsequently received a Bar to his CGM for further gallantry at Prouville, France, in 1918.
His award is particularly significant because it represents the only Conspicuous Gallantry Medal and Bar
The 1921 ribbon change
The ribbon of the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal was changed in 1921.
The earlier ribbon consisted of equal stripes of blue, white and blue. From 1921, this was replaced by the distinctive design featuring a broad central white stripe with narrow dark blue edges.
