Since the early 1990s, the European Union has deployed personnel to support peace, stability and security operations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and beyond. These missions have included military interventions, observer missions, peacekeeping operations, police training and security sector reform programmes.

History of European Union Medals

European Union mission medals were introduced to recognise personnel serving on operations conducted under the European Union's developing security and defence framework.

Beginning with monitoring missions in the Balkans during the breakup of Yugoslavia, the EU gradually expanded its role in international crisis management. Over time, missions have included military operations, peacekeeping deployments, training missions and civilian support programmes.

Today, European Union medals recognise service on missions conducted under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), with operations taking place throughout Europe, Africa, the Middle East and international waters.
