Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) – King George VI – Miniature

The Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) was a British military gallantry decoration awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the Royal Air Force for exceptional courage, valour and devotion to duty while engaged in active flying operations.

This King George VI (GVI) miniature replica medal represents one of the most distinguished awards for gallantry in the air during the Second World War.

History of the Distinguished Flying Medal

Instituted on 3 June 1918, alongside the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), the Distinguished Flying Medal recognised acts of bravery by RAF personnel below commissioned officer rank while undertaking flying duties against the enemy.

The medal was awarded during both World Wars, with approximately 105 awards made during the First World War and around 6,500 during the Second World War.

Additional acts of gallantry could be recognised through the award of a bar to the medal. Approximately 60 second awards were made during the Second World War.

Flight Sergeant Donald Ernest Kingaby

One of the most remarkable recipients of the Distinguished Flying Medal was Donald Ernest Kingaby, a Royal Air Force fighter pilot whose extraordinary courage earned him three awards of the DFM.

His second bar was announced in The London Gazette on 7 November 1941, making him the only recipient to receive the Distinguished Flying Medal three times.

Following his commissioning, Kingaby went on to receive both the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), further recognising his exceptional wartime service.
