The Military Medal – George V Crowned Head represents the rare second George V issue of this distinguished British gallantry award.

The Military Medal was instituted on 25 March 1916 to recognise acts of bravery in battle by non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British Army. Eligibility was applied retrospectively to acts performed from the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

Originally restricted to men, eligibility was extended to women by Royal Warrant on 21 June 1916. During the First World War, approximately 115,600 Military Medals were awarded, together with 5,796 first award bars, 180 second award bars and a single third award bar. Each bar represented a further qualifying act of bravery.

This version features the crowned and uniformed portrait of King George V introduced in 1930. Used between 1930 and 1937, it is generally regarded as the rarest of the principal Military Medal portrait types because comparatively few awards were made during the interwar period.

The reverse carries the inscription “FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD” within a laurel wreath, surmounted by the Royal Cypher and crown. The medal is worn from its distinctive dark blue, white and crimson striped ribbon.
