The Albert Medal in Gold for Gallantry in Saving Life on Land was one of the United Kingdom's highest awards for civilian gallantry and life-saving heroism.

Instituted in 1866 by Queen Victoria following the death of Prince Albert, the medal was created to recognise acts of exceptional bravery undertaken to save the lives of others. The Gold Albert Medal represented the highest class of the award and was granted only in the most outstanding circumstances.

The Land Division of the Albert Medal recognised courage performed away from the sea, often involving acts of heroism during industrial accidents, fires, railway disasters, mining incidents and other life-threatening emergencies.

Awarded only rarely, the Gold Albert Medal is today one of the most sought-after British gallantry decorations amongst collectors, historians and medal enthusiasts.

In 1971, living recipients of the Albert Medal were invited to exchange their awards for the George Cross, further cementing the Albert Medal's place amongst Britain's most prestigious bravery awards.
