Africa General Service Medal with Kenya Clasp – Elizabeth II

The Elizabeth II Africa General Service Medal with Kenya clasp was awarded for qualifying service during operations connected with the Kenya Emergency.

Thirty-five years after the previous Somaliland 1920 clasp, Army Order 15 of 1955 authorised the Kenya clasp for personnel who completed the required period of service between 21 October 1952 and 17 November 1956.

The clasp recognised qualifying service during operations against the Mau Mau insurgency. British Army regiments, Royal Air Force squadrons, locally recruited forces and members of the Kenya Police were among those eligible for the award.

The silver-coloured medal features the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The reverse depicts Britannia standing beside a lion, holding a palm branch and scroll, with the word AFRICA below. The medal is suspended from its distinctive yellow ribbon, edged in black and featuring two narrow green stripes.
